This is my first Spring in Tennessee and so far so good. Quite good actually. The birds, trees, wildflowers and butterflies are just awesome. I have to say that the blossoming redbud trees is the most spectacular tree display I have ever witnessed. I also want to mention that the other day along the roadside of Route 33 just north of Knoxville, a couple were selling really nice well constructed Bluebird, Carolina Wren, and Bat houses for $5 each. The gentleman was painting the roof of one of the wren houses with a confederate flag. I was going to buy it just for amusement, but he wasn't finished painting the stars on it. It was a good deal but I didn't get any further information about them other than they will be there again some day next week. Definitely worth a stop. Anyhow, this morning I took a short walk along the base of Douglas Dam and was treated to a nice sampling of migrants and residents. Ospreys were seen catching fish. There were hundreds of Cliff Swallow nests under the bridge and most of them were already occupied. FOS birds for me included Summer Tanager, Orchard Oriole, Cliff Swallow and Catbird. Location: Douglas Dam - Sevier County Observation date: 4/20/08 Notes: Cliff Swallows occupying most of the nests under the bridge. Male Orchard Oriole and Summer Tanager seen close and singing.
