Thousands of sandhill cranes remain on the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs
and Rhea counties as of today, Monday, January 3.  There appeared to be fewer
sandhill cranes than last week near the HWR viewing area at the gazebo. I saw
one
immature bald eagle at the HWR. From the nearby Cherokee Removal Memorial Park
viewing area near dusk, one adult whooping crane was seen, and thousands of
sandhill cranes flew into the Hiwassee Island area. The Tennessee and Hiwassee
Rivers are very high due to Saturday's rain. Therefore, exposed mud bar area is
greatly reduced, so many of the sandhills flew on toward the north end of
Hiwassee Island.
