Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Meigs County Birchwood, TN From the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park viewing platform about 4 p.m., I saw a juvenile whooping crane on a mudbar in the Hiwassee River east of Hiwassee Island. It appears to me that there has been a marked decrease in the number of sandhill cranes for the past couple of days following three of four days of hundreds of sandhills migrating southward. There are still hundreds of sandhills present, however. From my observations over the last few years, the peak population of sandhill cranes has usually been within a week either side of Christmas, so more sandhills are likely to come into the area later. The very high water levels following the heavy rains about one week ago have receded. This should open up the traditional "roosting areas" on the HWR. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
