March 18, 2011 Shelby Co. TN DeSoto/Tunica Co. MS After rain and bad weather, came 70 degrees, fine cloudless skies and strong winds out of the south. All combined for evidently great traveling conditions and that is exactly what I found. Not one Golden-Plover, not one Upland, not one Pectoral Sandpiper, all the fields swept clean of Wind Birds. One sure thing, more will fill the void and soon. A few Pipits, along with many pairs of courting Horned Larks and thousands of Robins were in the fields but the most amazing void was the complete lack of GULLS at the Tunica Landfill, NOT ONE. The Red-necked Grebe still lounges around Robco Lake with scattered Ring-billed Gulls, swallows, DC Cormorants, Pied-billed Grebes and ducks. The Mississippi River should finally turn around and head down a little this weekend after steadily rising 36 feet in 30 days. Jeff R.
