Nov. 22, 2009 Arkabutla Lake, MS The best way to get a Clarke's Grebe ID right in your head (as the one I found yesterday at Reelfoot Lake in northwest TN) is to find a Western Grebe the next day. I got lucky again and found a classic Western Grebe just 20 miles south of Memphis at Arkabutla Dam in MS today. All the field marks observed today, reaffirmed my ID of yesterday's rarity at Reelfoot. I think this is the first Western Grebe record for Arkabutla Lake and one of just a few for MS. Q. B. Gray was able to make it in time to watch the bird with me. Fortunately being able to shoot today, from the top of the dam, (elevation keeps you from shooting directly through the heat waves) I was able to get diagnostic photos even though the bird was half way across the lake. Poor photos of both birds starting at: _http://www.pbase.com/update_image/119630185_ (http://www.pbase.com/update_image/119630185) Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
