This afternoon I decided to take a late afternoon walk on the private peninsula
at the end of Lyons Bend After walking a couple hundred yards I came out on
the cove and noticed about 30 birds. My binos showed a large group of
Blue-winged Teals, a Shovelar and some Green-winged Teals. But there was also a
Cinnamon looking Teal. No camera and no scope led me to rush home and return.
Susan Hoyle showed up about the same time I did and had a similar story. She
had seen this Cinnamon looking teal shortly before me and rushed home to
consult bird books before returning.
Well, after looking thru my scope and comparing the bird to Google images it
was clear this was a hybrid Cinnamon and Blue-winged Teal. No new state bird
for me but the adrenalin from a possible new Knox County record was worth the
effort.
We did get views after that of both Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs so with the
other teals and Shoveler is was a fun hour or so of birding.
Cheers
