I ran the Wrigley Breeding Bird Survey route this morning, which runs from Hickman County to Williamson County. I had cicadas calling at the large majority of stops, not surprisingly. Overall they were not loud enough in these morning hours to cause trouble hearing bird songs, with one exception. It can be extremely challenging trying to pick out a Blue-winged Warbler song from amidst even a moderate amount of cicada buzz. The one I did tally was at a cicada-free stop; on a couple of occasions I was never able to decide if what I was hearing was really a Blue-wing or not, so they didn't get tallied. As the cicada zone this year seems to coincide with much of the Blue-winged Warbler nesting range it'll be interesting to see if there is a dip in the BBS numbers for this year.
