Spent a little time around Cherokee Dam on Monday afternoon (21 Jan 2008).
Most of the birds (unless noted below) were in Jefferson County. With
most ponds frozen, lots of dabblers were out on the lake, some too far to
ID in the heat waves which were (perhaps ironically) pretty bad today.

Gadwall, at least 16

Am Wigeon, at least 3

Mallard, about 175, some jokers could have been hiding in the more distant
groups as the near groups held the wigeon and some of the Gadwall mixed
in, about 40 of these were in the tailwaters below the dam (Jefferson/
Grainger Co line)

Canvasback, 3

Redhead, 9

Ring-necked Duck, 3

GREATER SCAUP, at least 1 male, another male scaup was seen farther away
which also looked like a Greater but too far and too many heat waves to
be completely sure; field marks seen on nearest bird include head shape
(both in profile and head-on), bill size, whiteness of flanks.

Bufflehead, 5 (Grainger Co)

COMMON GOLDENEYE, 1 female hanging out with...

Red-breasted Merganser, 1 male

Wild Turkey, about 6

Common Loon, 7

Horned Grebe, about 45, possibly many more lost in the heat waves

Great Blue Heron, about 20 in the tailwaters (Jeff/Grainger)
(didn't see any Black-crowned Night-Herons here but didn't look that hard)

Am Coot, only about 5 and they were in the tailwaters (Jeff/Grainger),
VERY low count for here

Bonaparte's Gull, 200++

Ring-billed Gull, 400+
