I spent the last couple days at Cheatham WMA (in Cheatham Co, of course) doing bird surveys. Just a few highlights: 26 May 2010 Did an unofficial nightjar survey, starting at dusk, along the Headquarters Rd from one end to the other (8.8 miles) stopping every 0.3-0.5 miles for 3-4 minutes and listening, while keeping tabs on any birds I may have had on consecutive points. I made 27 stops and detected 29 Whip-poor-wills, 4 Barred Owls, and a Yellow-breasted Chat (yes, chats will sing all night). No Chuck-wills-widows. 27 May 2010 Blue-headed Vireo -1, singing regularly, but also did some very Yellow-throated Vireo-like phrases that made me investigate, even though I had my money on a blue-headed. After 20 min I finally got a good look at the blue-headed and confirmed my hearing. Just a late migrant. I did another nightjar survey (a shorter one this time as 4:30 am comes early in the morning), starting at dusk on Wiley Pardue Rd and through the community towards Headquarters Rd. 3.5 miles (4-5 min per stop), 8 stops, 15 Whip-poor-wills. I had 6 whips at one spot, incl a pair next to the road doing their soft "whip" calls almost in unison with the male flying low doing circles, presumably above the female. It was just light enough to see the one bird circling. No Chuck-wills-widows. 28 May 2010 Blue-winged Warbler -1 male singing away in an old shrubby field. He sang their second song more often than the usual, "Bee buzzz" song. Totals for a few species from 3 mornings of point counts this week, mostly along permanent creeks: 101 Acadian Flycatchers 70 Red-eyed Vireos 66 Worm-eating Warblers (incl seeing a broken wing display) 31 Louisiana Waterthrush 3 Cerulean Warblers Great birding!
