I opened 4 mist nets in the woods behind my house in Chattanooga for 6 hours last night to mark my first night of participation in Project Owl Net (a Northern Saw-whet Owl mist netting project being conducted at numerous sites in the US and Canada). Although the Northern Saw-whet Owl tape that ran the entire 6 hour period did not lure any saw-whets into the nets (may be just a little to early?) it did aggravate a Winter Wren that reacted aggressively to the tape as I started it at dusk. It immediately flew through the 2 larger mesh owl nets without slowing down before getting caught in one of the songbird nets on the flanks of my net array. I suppose Winter Wrens share much of their range with Saw-whets so it makes sense that they would react to calls. I did manage to band one red morph Eastern Screech Owl around 7:30 which I caught again around 10 and then had it escape from a third net around 11:00 as I approached. David F.
