You have reached Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. This is Update Number #2 made on January 13, 2004. You can call the RBA at 423 -821-4381. Judy Newsome, Bonnie Johnson, Hayden Wilson and I (Kevin Calhoon) spent January 12 birding parts of Sequatchie and Bledsoe counties. Highlights included: - Two Snow Geese and a ROSS'S GOOSE at Swofford pond in Bledsoe county. This pond is about three miles north of Pikeville on East Valley road. (DeLorme Atlas pg 41, 5-D) - One dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along Ninemile Cross RD about two miles north of the its intersection with East Valley Rd.(Bledsoe co.) (DeLorme Atlas pg 41, 5-C) This a historic wintering area for the species and one was seen by Carol Fegarido and Roi Shannon in same area on December 18, 2003. - 2 BARN OWLS in a private silo in Bledsoe county and one on private land in Sequatchie co. - Many BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS around the Johnson farm and Cookie Jar Cafe (Sequatchie co.) (you must stop and eat when you come see these birds!). This flock of Brewers has been present the last two winters in this general location. Three Redheads were at the duck pond at Camp Jordan (Hamilton co.) on January 5. (Kevin Calhoon) The Hiwassee CBC (circle includes parts of Meigs,Rhea,Hamilton,McMinn,Bradely co.) was conducted on January 1 with 17 observers in the field. The tally was one of the best in several years with 106 species! Highlights included: 1 ROSS'S GOOSE 1 immature TUNDRA SWAN 4 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE 1 adult GOLDEN EAGLE 1 SNOW GOOSE All of the above birds were seen by Bonnie Johnson and Judy Newsome at the Blythe Ferry unit of the Hiwassee refuge. And all but the eagle and the White-fronts were seen by many as the sun was setting. 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW - This was the first bird I put my Swarovski's on in 2004! (Kevin Calhoon) 1 GRAY CATBIRD 1 MERLIN - Found at the camp near the end of Armstrong Ferry road (Meigs co.) BREWERS BLACKBIRDS and PINE SISKINS were seen in the Gillespie Bend area. (this area is in Rhea county in the north side of the count circle and Tennessee River) Despite the very high lake levels 15 Dunlin, Least Sandpipers and a single GREATER YELLOWLEGS were found. 2 more WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found on Hiwassee Island. The numbers have not been totalled yet, but at least 13,000 SANDHILL CRANES were in the count circle! Thanks again to all of the participants who made this count an outstanding success.
