This is Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. This is Update Number #1 made on January 11, 2005. You can call the RBA at 423 -821-4381. The two Ross's Geese I found on (1/10) with around a 100 Canada Geese at the 1.0 mile marker at the Brainerd Levee were not seen today (1/11). They were in the field between the levee and South Chickamauga Creek. Walk from the Shallowford Rd. parking lot past Boyd Buchanan to marker 1.0 and watch on your left. I believe this is only the second record of the species for the levee. A Palm Warbler and 15 American Pipits were also in the area. One Whooping Crane (I believe it is #107, a 2001 hatch) is still being seen at Blythe Ferry as of January 6. (Ken Dubke, Kevin Calhoon) Some interesting birds have been seen over the last couple of weeks: A female Rose-breasted Grosbeak was coming to Jonnie Sue Lyons' residence on Signal Mountain from Jan. 3 - 7 and may still be visiting. Two Spotted Sandpipers were observed above Nickajack Dam in Marion co. on January 8 for another unusual winter record. (John Henderson, Daniel Jacobson, Janice Chadwell) David Spicer observed a Yellow-throated Warbler (the gender was not mentioned) at a rest area on I-24 in Marion co. on Jan.1. There have only been two other winter records for the species in the state of Tennessee. Six Redheads have been frequenting the pond at Camp Jordan over the last couple of weeks. (Janice Chadwell, Susan Schott) The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on January 13 7:00 PM at Accension Luthern Church, 720 South Germantown Rd.
