Cedar Hill Swamp WMA Robertson County, TN 01 November 2009 The recent posts regarding Cedar Hill Swamp piqued my interest. Today's forecast and subsequent brilliant sunshine brought it to fruition. Tony Lance was kind enough to guide Danny Shelton and myself to this very special area where the RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS did not disappoint. We must have observed at least 15 birds, both adult and juvenile, as they moved about in the bright morning sunlight. We watched them glean acorns from a tree, fly back and forth, move up and down the bare tree trunks, and even fly-catch now and then. The light could not have been better. It was one of those mornings where I know other species were present, but I just couldn't focus on them. To name a few, however, there were WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, SONG SPARROWS, a SWAMP SPARROW, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a BELTED KINGFISHER, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES as well as several other Woodpecker species: NORTHERN FLICKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. Later the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE on Carter Road showed up on cue and gave us a good show.
