In case anyone is interested in trying to add Tennessee to the list of states for this spring's Cassin's Sparrow mini-irruption (?), here's are links to two good 7-minute recordings of the species' song. The recent birds found in other states have been singing males engaging in their aerial "skylarking" display; otherwise one would be EXTREMELY hard pressed to pick one of these drab skulkers out! It sounds like they have been found in the same general habitat as that favored by Grasshopper Sparrows. http://macaulaylibrary.org/audio/50230 http://macaulaylibrary.org/audio/50231 The song is musical and varied, incorporating some elements reminiscent of its close cousin the Bachman's Sparrow. These two samples demonstrate some of the variability with which individual singers combine these elements. Hearing that song just makes you feel the prairie wind blowing across your face...
