THU 30 MAR 2006 Elizabethton, Carter Co., TN D. Holt Thursday afternoon Dianne Draper and I checked out the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nesting colony in the woods beside Blackbottom Shoals (near the intersection of Watauga Rd. and Sycamore Shoals Road). We saw five adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS there. Two were standing together on a nest, and one of them chased off a third bird when it approached too closely. We also looked at the two sites where this winter I had found possible Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests. We didn't see any herons at the Race Dr. site, but at the site crossriver from the Carter Mansion we saw a small heron fly through the trees and over Highway 19E...HOWEVER, it was a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON.
