On the way back from Nashville yesterday (17 May 2004), about 11:30
AM, CDT, Amber and I saw a dark ibis (Plegadis sp.) fly over I-40
right at the rest area on the Caney Fork River at the Putnam/Smith
County line (around mile marker 268). The ibis looked to have flown
from the river south of the interstate. It passed overhead about
30ft above the interstate about 300-500 ft in front of us. It dropped
below the treeline, possibly landing in the river on the other side
of the interstate near the rest area.

Hope someone can get out and relocate this bird and get an ID to
species (Glossy or White-faced).

Incidently, we had just seen a Green Heron and Great Blue Heron
fly over the interstate in Smith County over the previous 2 miles
or so.
