Tuesday while volunteering at Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountain National Park (Blount County) I observed the following birds while trying to keep park visitors from interfering with buck white-tails in pursuit of females. It was the most active day I have seen with over a dozen 6,8 or 10 point bucks chasing does around in many locations along the 11-mile loop road. Great blue heron 1 Bufflehead 37 (on sewerage ponds) Mallard 1 (on sewerage ponds) Canada geese 22 (on sewerage ponds) Northern harrier 2 (females) Red-tailed hawk 2 Red-shouldered hawk 1 Wild turkey 5 Greater yellowlegs 1 (sewerage ponds) Downy wp 2 Pileated wp 5 Red-bellied wp 1 Eastern phoebe 8 A. crow 15+ Carolina chickadee 2 Tufted titmouse 6 Carolina wren 3 Golden-crowned kinglet 1 Eastern bluebird 8 Robin 2 Hermit thrush 1 N. cardinal 4 Song sparrow 11 Swamp sparrow 2 White-throated sparrow 7 Meadowlark 47 Not too bad for not really birding in the Cove.
