The 10th Cades Cove CBC was held on December 28th, 2008. For the third year in a row the count was affected by weather. Moderate to heavy rain fell until around 10AM reducing hours in the field. A Brown-headed Nuthatch found at the Top of the World community was a new species for the count bringing the all-time total to 93. Despite the rain, record high numbers were recorded for Bufflehead, Turkey Vulture, Phoebe, American Robin, American Pipit, Cedar Waxwing, and Pine Warbler. The number of Bufflehead spending the winter at the Cades Cove sewage treatment ponds has steadily increased over the last four years with nearly 100 birds being found there. Misses included Ruffed Grouse, House Finch, and Red Crossbill. Dark-eyed Junco and Northern Cardinal were found in unusally low numbers.
