Today while volunteering at Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountain NP, Blount County I had 40 species including FOS Blue-headed vireo, Blue-gray gnatcatcher, Rough-winged swallow, Barn swallow, Louisiana waterthrush, Gray catbird and Barred owl. There were only 13 Bufflehead on the sewerage ponds (down from 68 last Tuesday) along with 14 Wood ducks, 2 Mallards and 2 Wilson's snipe. With schools on break in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Florida there were loads of visitors enjoying the mid-70 temps. A single black bear was reported near the Methodist Church. Wild turkeys were displaying at three locations along the loop road. On the way home at 4:14 PM I observed the white morph Great blue heron in the Little River about 1/2 mile north of the Kinzel Springs bridge on the Old Walland Highway.
