Sept. 10, 2003 Ensley Bottoms Mud Island Shelby Co. TN A quick trip in the afternoon to the pits yielded only 14 species of shorebirds but still excellent numbers to look through and time did not allow a complete search. I did not see the Willet, Upland nor any dowitchers but did find 1 Baird's and 1 Buff-breasted. The real object of the trip was to sit in the late afternoon to see what might float or flyby on the river. The river has reached its peak farther north after a 17 foot rise and has started a quick decline but it was still churning along here at Memphis carrying a lot of debris and even large trees. The rise leveled off here and the river will start its decent today. I had one group of about 16 Least Sandpipers come by and 3 Killdeer in about an hours watch. The congregation of Chimney Swifts is as huge as ever with few swallows in the mix of Trees, Rough-winged and a single Cliff. The heart jumped a little when a saw a small bird riding one of the logs but it was only a Black Tern. It was worth the trip anyhow but a Sabine's would have been nice. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
