31 May 2011 Cheatham Wildlife Management Area Cheatham County While assisting with some Cerulean warbler surveys this morning I found an active Broad-winged hawk nest. The hawk flew out of the fork of a large oak, which was very close to where I was standing, and began calling non-stop. I then noticed the stick nest, but wasn't sure if it was active. I continued on with the rest of the route and then returned to the area after surveys were completed. An adult was sitting on the nest and did not flush during my brief presence. According to Atlas of the Breeding Birds of TN (Nicholson 1997) peak egg laying for Broad-wings is in late April or early May and incubation time is 31 days, so this clutch should be hatching soon presumably. I did not detect any Cerulean warblers this morning.
