I stopped by the UT Experimental Farm in Spring Hill yesterday to sort through the blackbirds around the livestock barns. I observed some unusual behavior (I think) between a female Brewer's Blackbird and a male House Sparrow, which were perched next to each other on a line full of House Sparrows by a barn. The Brewer's would scoot next to the House Sparrow and lean into him and he would scoot away. She would repeat this until he would briefly preen the top of her head and then would move away again. This went on for a couple minutes until all the birds flushed. I think this is common behavior for mated pairs of some species, but they were an unlikely couple and I got the impression he wasn't interested. There were at least 2 Brewer's along with many cowbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, and grackles. There were also 20+ American Pipits around one of the barns on the snowy grass.
