Brainerd Levee, Chattanooga, TN April 20, 2003 Woodcock, flushed in foot-high grass head-high shrubs about 10:00 AM, between Brainerd Recreational Complex and Brainerd Levee. I looked for a nest, but no luck. This looks quite a bit like habitat where friends and I have found Woodcock nests near Savannah, TN. One Northern Shoveler remaining. Ten or so Blue-winged Teal, inclulding a few pairs in swampy woods. Could they nest here? Four Solitary Sandpipers. Thought I heard a Summer Tanager. Snake story: Friday at Standifer Gap Marsh I saw a black snake in the top of a bush about 6 feet high. I thought perhaps it was waiting for a careless bird to land. From the number and diameter of the loops I estimated its length at ten feet. Then I noticed it had two heads and two tails. Not much of a way to ambush birds!
