I was able to confirm that the bird I heard 5 days ago (6/11/2010) in the Lewis State Forest in central Lewis County is indeed a Blue- headed Vireo. I returned to the spot this morning (6/16/2010) and got good looks at it. It is singing a simplified, repetitive variant of the usual song, which is what made me hesitant at first (Yellow- throated Vireos occasionally sing a somewhat similar reduced song with less reediness and less variation in phrases than is typical for them). Being at the same spot for 5 days in mid-June would seem to preclude a very late migrant. I'll continue checking the spot every week or so to see if I find evidence of a mate or confirmed nesting. The habitat is fairly mature pine (mostly loblolly, some shortleaf and black) mixed with much subcanopy hardwood. This bird is interesting in combination with the one that Scott Somershoe found in late May in Cheatham County. Apparently there were no records of the species from the Western Highland Rim on the breeding bird atlas; has there ever been confirmed nesting of the species in this province? This is one of Tennessee's more sparsely- birded provinces, especially the Wayne-Lewis-Perry-Hickman-Humphreys county area outside of a few hot spots. Many hills-n-hollers and very few birders to cover them, so absence of evidence would not necessarily constitute evidence of absence.
