My daughter Gwen and I avoided the rain in middle Tennessee and spent a pleasant half day with Jeff Wilson in Memphis. Jeff showed Gwen many of the 12 life birds she got to see yesterday, including Loggerhead Shrikes feeding young, a brilliant Baltimore Oriole, and Gwen's favorite, a male Painted Bunting. We struck out on the whistling ducks at Ensley, however, and headed back to Nashville by way of Hatchie NWR to look at cormorants. There was only one on the lake - a Double-crested Cormorant. No sign of the Neotropic Cormorant that Jeff reported a couple weeks ago. We had a pleasant funny surprise, though, as we drove down the back side of Oneal Lake - 7 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks perched in a small cypress tree in the middle of the lake! (See photo at link below if interested.)
