Aug. 1-2-3, 2008
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

Friday morning, I checked out the pits after the heavy rain on Thursday past
through. There were more shorebirds than you could shake a stick at. Over
100 Western Sandpipers and 20 plus Semipalmated Plovers among the many
thousands
 of new birds.

I did not see the Black-bellied female or young. This morning I could not
find her and after I came back after lunch, I was talking to one of the workers

and he said a photographer had spent a good deal of time walking the weeds
around the nest area in the small watered area where mom and the kids were
staying.

Today, I decided to scope all the areas that might hold her, sitting for 30
to 45 minutes at each location. At 3:30 this afternoon, I looked through a
small hole in the vegetation and barely could make her out. She had moved a
third of a mile away from the nest area. When she realized I could see her, she

stole back into even denser habitat.

That is the good news but the bad is there are only 7 of the original 10
young left in the brood. The young are still downy but are growing fast. In the

area where she nested the Coot that has summered, 9 young and 3 adult Wood
Ducks, 2 Mallard young and 9 Blue-wing Teal young and 2 adult female Teal are
still feeding.
I've added 2 photos from today at:
