Why would responsible birders use a tape several times to lure a Sora out that had given its "whinny, descending call maybe 10 times today" and in the breeding season in the limited habitat that it has available in the area for breeding and had been positively identified many times? Why would responsible birders keep flushing the Soras when their identification was certain and all you had to do to see one , as one birder did, was sit down on the bank? Why would responsible birders keep flushing an American Bittern especially since its existence depends on the limited habitat available? Responsible birders would a) enjoy knowing that two wetland species, not normally present in the area this time of year, are present and one of them might be nesting whether knowing so or not; or maybe not even seeing them; b) make sure that the area is protected and a management plan in place to ensure its future; and c) use their energies to create additional suitable wetland habitat so this type of event is repeated many times. "Build it and they will come," again proven, this time by some natural habitat enhanced by beavers.
