Location: Hamblen county, Lake Cherokee, site of 12 (mile) marker, 36.26* N.
83.38* W
Date: 7/16/2006; 7:00 - 8:30 PM

We returned to Bird Island 6 weeks after seeing a lot of active nesting
there. We found fewer GBH and BCNH, more cormorants and great egrets. There
were still nestilings in a few Great Blue nests, but the remainder of the
visilble nests on the island were empty. The cormorants dominate the trees
along the south side of the island; they made threatening gestures toward
herons that happened to alight on nearby limbs.

The herons and egrets roost in the center of the island, often in dense
foliage. We certainly missed a few in our counts.

A lone great egret stood on the shore, not foraging, and didn't fly off as
we approached. He seemed a bit off balance and weak. We contacted TWRA
about the sickly bird - no response yet.

Highlights:

Double-crested cormorant (200+)
Geat blue heron (65)
Great egret (52)
Snowy egret
Little blue heron (3)
Cattle egret (5)
Black-crowned Night-heron (49)
Ring-billed gull
Eastern kingbird
