Oct. 19, 2011 Benwood Lake, Crittenden Co, AR Two trips by Benwood in the afternoon did not turn up either the Wigeon or Godwit. This does not mean the birds are not in the area as both times Peregrine Falcons were strafing the lake and numbers of Geese and ducks were leaving and going to the wet harvested fields to sit and feed. Birds were still filtering back in a 5 PM. There were more Pintail and Wigeon in the mix but overall specie diversity was the same. There are now 15 Avocet but most shorebird numbers, except L-b Dowitcher and Stilt Sandpiper, are way down. Both Black-bellied and Golden-Plovers were found along with single White-rumped and Baird's Sandpipers. A third year Bald Eagle was chased off its kill by an audacious white-headed Red-tailed Hawk (appeared to be a hybrid Krider's) which surprised us both!! A male Merlin took off after an adult Bald Eagle and chased it out of sight. Plus a large immature female Peregrine, chased everything including a decoy pigeon but her crop bulged from too many successful hits to stay interested any anything too long. A Harrier played tag off and on with both Peregrine Falcons. All the swallows were gone from the telephone lines but lots of Red-tailed Hawks were taking their places as the front swept some things out and other species in for the winter mix. Jeff R.
