Hello birders,
I apologize for the lateness of this post. Yesterday, Thursday, March 3, a few
of us Walkers went to Woods Reservoir in Franklin County. It was great birding,
but I must admit that I was very much not dressed for the weather and I almost
froze and toppled into the lake. No worries...I'm okay now. Below is an
overview of our circle around the lake.
Morris Ferry Dock:
Common LoonsHorned and Pied-billed GrebesLots of Tree SwallowsBonaparte's
Gullsnothing too spectacular
Little Elder Island view from Morris Ferry Bridge Road:
a raft of scaups (too distant to separate species)a male Red-breasted
Mergansera male BuffleheadRuddy Ducks more of the usual loons and grebesone
male Purple Martin among the numerous Tree Swallows
Franklin County Park:
a second raft of scaups, close enough to identify both speciesa male
Ring-necked Duck and a female Bufflehead with the scaupsmore loons and
grebesmore Bonaparte's Gullsmore Tree Swallowsone Fish Crow calling from an
unknown area across the lake
The Dam at Elk River Dam Road:
more grebesmore Tree Swallowsmore Bonaparte's Gullssix Ruddy Ducksone Pacific
Loon with a small handful of Common Loons (this is the second winter I have
seen the former here)
Gossick Leadership Center:
still more grebes, Common Loons, Bonaparte's Gulls, and swallows
Brumalow Creek:
an estimate of 34 American White Pelicans on the back side of Little Elder
Islandabout 51 cormorantsoh yeah, and more loons, grebes, and Bonaparte's Gulls
I have a really bad digiscope of the Pacific Loon and a better digiscope of the
pelicans. Checklists are also on eBird, for any of you eBird users.
Good birding,
