I made a 15 minute stop @ the Bear Creek Rd. marsh below the Hwy
58 bridge before punching the clock this morning:
Red-headed woodpeckers were seen on both sides of the access
gravel road that splits the marsh.
A yellow-throated warbler & a brown headed nuthatch were seen
within a foot of each other working a pine tree.
An osprey was perched nearby on a dead pine surveying the algae
covered water, as were a belted kingfisher & 2 eastern
kingbirds.
Phoebes were everywhere (sadly so were starlings).
Also seen/ heard: Am goldfinch, E. bluebirds, White-eyed vireos,
Common yellowthroat, Blue-gray gnatcatchers, Red tail hawk,
Pileated/ Red bellied/ Downy woodpeckers.
Absent were the easily seen 2 great egrets & 2 black-crowned
night herons that spent most of the summer at the marsh (one
visit this summer, I saw a great egret, great blue heron, green
heron, & a deer all in one binoc view? a real Kodak moment).
FYI, a security guard met me at the Bear Creek marsh gate a few
weeks ago. No problem really, we had a nice conversation. A
bomb threat on the Oak Ridge Reservation caused them to more
closely watch any parked cars in the area.
Correction to my post Monday re: Rankin WMA-
I stated that some smaller Least Terns were likely in with 3
Black Terns seen. Well, revisiting the bird books it seems the
Black Tern is 10? lg.when I thought it was 14?. So the assumed
9.75? lg. ?smaller? Least Terns were more likely Black Terns. I
guess I have to eat ?crow? on that one (not the first time,
certainly not the last).
To everything tern, tern, tern,
There is a season tern, tern, tern?
(has anyone thought of that one yet Dean or David ?)
