Forwarded to TNBIRD for Knox Martin. An injured mature Bald Eagle was brought to the Mid-South Raptor Center in Memphis on 28 June by a Perry County TWRA agent after the bird was found unable to fly near Lobelville, TN. The bird was taken to David Hannon, DVM where it was operated on for a compound fracture of the right wing. At this time the outlook for release is doubtful due to the severe nature of the injury. The bird was banded with a USF & WS leg band. I was able to get banding information from the Federal Bird Banding Office in Maryland. The bird was banded as a chick in early July of 1986 on a nest in Gibson County, Indiana, probably somewhere on or near the Wabash River. Gibson County is in the lower SW corner of the state. In the past 22 years the bird has been recorded twice, both times in Tennessee. In 1987 it was spotted and in 2004 it was treated for an injury. Dr. Hannon found signs of an old leg fracture, so I suspect the bird was treated by a rehab facility for a broken leg. Hopefully the bird will recover enough to be released, but if not, a home will be found in a suitable institution.
