[TN-Bird] Bald Eagles and Sandhill Cranes at Hiwassee

Around 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, I visited the old Blythe Ferry 
landing in Meigs County. Hundreds of sandhill cranes were in view around the 
edges of the Tennessee River, Hiwassee River, and Hiwassee Island. Going on to 
the viewing area at the gazebo in the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge around 4:15 
p.m., I saw from 8 - 10 bald eagles around the frozen-over slough. Because of 
the distance to a couple of the birds, I wasn't sure that those two were 
eagles. All were immature birds. Any number greater than 8 is a new record for 
bald eagles at one time for me! Lots of sandhill cranes were flying into the 
area, although it seemed earlier than usual for them to be settling in for the 
night. Based on these observations, there are still good numbers of sandhill 
cranes in the area for the weekend "Sandhill Crane Viewing Days". You can view
