Around 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, I visited the old Blythe Ferry landing in Meigs County. Hundreds of sandhill cranes were in view around the edges of the Tennessee River, Hiwassee River, and Hiwassee Island. Going on to the viewing area at the gazebo in the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge around 4:15 p.m., I saw from 8 - 10 bald eagles around the frozen-over slough. Because of the distance to a couple of the birds, I wasn't sure that those two were eagles. All were immature birds. Any number greater than 8 is a new record for bald eagles at one time for me! Lots of sandhill cranes were flying into the area, although it seemed earlier than usual for them to be settling in for the night. Based on these observations, there are still good numbers of sandhill cranes in the area for the weekend "Sandhill Crane Viewing Days".
