Please excuse me for not having posted this observation earlier. It was made while I was doing grassland bird surveys for Cornell University, and had taken a vacation from tnbird. It was only as I was completing the Bachman's Sparrow description for the TWRA Watchable Wildlife website (www.tnwatchablewildlife.org) that I remembered my error. I have now posted this observation on ebird. This record was given to Cornell, TWRA and AEDC in 2008. 28 May 2008 One and possibly 2 Bachman's Sparrows 12:50 pm and 6:46 pm Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), Franklin County South side of Wattendorf Memorial Highway, east of Tullahoma Lat. 35.35356 / Long. -86.14419 In the spring of 2008 I conducted grassland bird surveys as part of a Cornell University southeast regional project. On 28 May 2008, after I had completed the specified morning point count route, I went looking for additional potential suitable grassland bird habitat as specified in the Atlasing portion of the protocol. At a site on AEDC south of Wattendorf Memorial Highway, about 3 miles east of Tullahoma, I had one and possibly two Bachman's Sparrows respond to playback. At 1250 in the afternoon, after playing the song of a Bachman's Sparrow for several minutes, one individual approached within 25 meters and chipped incessantly for about for over a half hour. The bird never sang. During this time I believe a second bird briefly joined the first, but I did not get a good enough view to be certain. The patch of habitat was approx. 400 x 1000 meters and structurally looked like an old-field. There was grassy and shrubby vegetation with 2 meter tall saplings. It looked like the area had been burned maybe 2 years before. I returned to the site that afternoon at 5:30 pm and passively listened for about one hour before using playback. After playback, at 6:46 pm, again one bird approached, this time silently, and stayed in the area for several minutes. I remained at the site until 7:45 pm, but never heard a Bachman's sing.
