Douglas Lake (956.2 ft.), Jefferson County,
4:30-7:30 PM, 9/20/07
Got off work early so we drove down to Dutch Bottoms and launched the canoe
in a shallow slough and motored across to Taylor's Bend. Shorebird numbers
were down, but the species variety made for a good trip. Viewing here is
not for the squeamish, you have to walk through some serious mud to look
across at the embayment.
Notable:
Canada goose (200+)
Blue-winged teal (42)
Dbl-crstd cormorant (45)
Great Blue heron (48)
Great egret (225)
Black-crowned night-heron (3)
Osprey
Bald eagle (1 adult, 1 imm.)
Ring-billed gull
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER
Killdeer (22)
AMERICAN AVOCET
Lesser yellowlegs (53)
Greater yellowlegs (6)
Spotted sandpiper (2)
RUDDY TURNSTONE
Semipalmated sandpiper
Least sandpiper (6)
Pectoral sandpiper (32)
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (juv.)
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (juv.- Our closeup digital images match the juv. on
p.201 of "The Shorebird Guide" [O'Brien et al.]- no
internal markings on coverts and tertials)
