Franks's American Bittern was found this morning at 7:30am in the Walter S. Davis Marsh below Tennessee State University in Nashville, this time directly across from Schafer Drive. I parked at the pulloff next to the marsh, and Frank showed up about 5 minutes later. From the pulloff the bittern was not visible, so we counted Northern Shovelers, Mallards, one Green-Winged Teal, and one Pied-Billed Grebe. Frank then left, and I drove down the road to investigate other viewing areas. There were none, but I noted that it would be easy to walk down the grassy side of the boulevard and scan the rest of the open marsh segments, and returned to the pullover. After walking just 200 feet, I spotted the Bittern standing still in a small watering hole. I pondered packing my camera this morning more than once, and decided not to take it, which sometimes seems like a good luck charm. Maybe a photo tomorrow.
