Feb 6, 2014 Fort Campbell Trigg & Christian Counties A significant number of arctic birds turned up here yesterday on Fort Campbell on the KY side of base (not far from the TN border). I observed a record 53 Tree Sparrows yesterday (not estimate...actual count) that were all in KY, but one large group (34 seen at one time on edge of gravel road) was only 120 feet inside the KY state line. These numbers far exceed my previous high count (8 in 2004) on the base during the last 14 years. Also had a large group of approximately 150 Lapland Longspurs, which far exceeds the previous high of 4 last year. American Pipit numbers were high (23) too, but not the highest (80 in 2004). The longspurs and most of the pipits were foraging in a large short-grass field near the airfield. Currently, there is a dusting of snow on the ground and I would guess 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice coats most of the vegetation and trees on the northern side of the base.
