This is truly sad news. When Kevin Calhoon and I along with two others
went to Costa Rica last February, one of our stops was Los Cusingos (Dr.
Skutch's home, which is now a preserve and a spectacular birding spot).
One of the highlights of our trip was getting to meet the legend
himself. Even though he could barely hear and was unable to get around
on his own, once he heard we were from Tennessee he asked us about some
of the wood warblers that breed in Tennessee and winter in his backyard.
We were all in such awe of him that none of us dared even ask him to
autograph our field guides (which he co-wrote)!

He'll be missed, but his ornithological legacy will far outlive him and
probably most of us too.
