Terry is absolutely correct, we must certainly play by the rules. And I would
agree that it would be worth exploring differential reporting rules for
temporally bounded (Big Years/annual lists), and unbounded (life lists),
birding
activities as a way of strengthening the sport.

Subject: [TN-Bird] ABA Big Year

Regarding the discussion over Sandy Komito's total for his big year in 1998:

He recorded a total of 745 for the year

4 birds that he saw that year were under consideration after the end of his year
Usually it takes several years for the state committees to decide upon any
record

3 were subsequently added to the official ABA list and one was not

By ABA rules, those 3 should all be added to his year list

This is the ABA rules and has nothing to do with
Sandy Komito, John Vanderpohl, or Babe Ruth

These were not proposed splits, or introduced species, but new birds to the ABA
area

You may not like or agree with the ABA Big Year rules, but if you play their
game, those are the rules you should honor

Cheers
