October 27, 2004 I was in Nashville all day Monday, all day Tuesday, and half a day today on a work-related trip and had the nice opportunity to bird a bit each morning before beginning the day. I found a few things that might be of interest to anyone keeping tabs on Davidson County and thought I should pass along the info. Here's a quick summary: at Seven Points Recreation Area (along J. Percy Priest Lake) October 25--Double-crested Cormorant (9); Pine Siskin; at the State Capitol building downtown (specifically, near the James Knox Polk gravesite and in the area to either side of it)--Brown Creeper (2 on October 26); Eastern Wood-Pewee (on October 27). John C. Robinson's An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Tennessee lists a late date of October 28 (1984) for Eastern Wood-Pewee in Nashville. Of course, that date might have been erased in the twenty years since the observation was recorded, but October 27 still represents a later than typical date. It's about a week later than I've ever seen the bird in Greene County. I was also surprised at the species diversity that I observed in the tiny little greenspace around the Capitol. In brief visits on the 26th and 27th, I observed the following (not a complete list, as I didn't take careful note of some very common urban species): Cooper's Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Eastern Phoebe, Brown Creeper, American Robin, Northern Cardinal, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, House Finch.
