Spring birds have been scarce in our yard except for the 8-10 mature males and a single female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. We did have a spectacular Yellow-throated Vireo in the misty rain on Saturday morning and a gorgeous mature male Orchard Oriole Monday morning - how can just burnt orange and black be so beautiful ? Two Blue-gray Gnatcatchers have kept us entertained for several days as we have waited for the warbler numbers to increase. This morning a couple of mature female Red-bellied Woodpeckers got our attention as they were fighting and flew against each other in the kind of chest bumping we've seen with Sumo wrestlers. We had never seen this behavior before. Tuesday afternoon we found a small flock of birds about 200 yards west of the boat dock on Holmes Creek Road. There were two White-eyed Vireos, an American Redstart male, Common Yellowthroat male, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, a single Eastern Phoebe, and a Northern Parula. Just before seeing this flock there were two pairs of Wood Ducks in the inlet southwest of the boat dock.
