I finally got out on the still snow-covered roads to check on Lake Tansi (south of Crossville in Cumberland Co.) and see if any northern waterfowl had come in. Conditions were ideal, with 99+% of the lake frozen and likely the only open water on the plateau being there. So I was surprised to find a male and two female Blue-winged Teal instead of a vagrant from the Great Lakes! Overall the variety and numbers of waterbirds was down a bit from the Crossville Christmas Bird Count, but not by much. Here's the ebird report (most numbers are estimates, some quite crude since the birds were packed close together and some groups were rather distant). With the birds packed together in the water, there was a whole lot of courting going on. Location: Lake Tansi Observation date: 1/14/11; 2-3 PM Notes: Lake Tansi beach. Clear, 30 degrees F, calm. Only 5 small open areas, each with 100-300 birds in the water or standing on the ice. One group of 75 coots was on lawns away from open water. Number of species: 19 Canada Goose 150 Mute Swan 1 Same bird (adult) seen all fall. This is the first time I've seen it fly. It landed on the ice near an open area in the middle of the lake. Wood Duck 6 American Black Duck 40 Mallard 200 Blue-winged Teal 3 Male and two females on the ice among Mallards. Well seen. Females had pale area on face near bill--I noted the blue wing patch on one as it stretched its wings. Canvasback 20 Redhead 5 Two males, 3 females. Ring-necked Duck 300 Estimated (hard to tell numbers when birds packed together) Bufflehead 40 Hooded Merganser 250 Ruddy Duck 15 Pied-billed Grebe 60 American Coot 250 Red-headed Woodpecker 3 Carolina Chickadee 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Eastern Bluebird 4 Song Sparrow 1 This report was generated automatically by eBird v2(http://ebird.org) Ed LeGrand Crossville, Cumberland Co., TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
