Cocke & Jefferson counties, 5/29/07, 5:00-7:00 PM Lake elevation : 981.7 We launched our canoe near the Leadvale trestle and traveled east, then south about a mile past the "21" mile marker, surveying both sides of the 10 Island section of the lake. The osprey nest on the first silo was intact but unoccupied; there were 2 ospreys in the other, at the riverbend. Two great egrets were displaying nuptial plumage & picking up, grasping and flying with sticks in their bills. We didn't see any nests. We went ashore by a 1/2 acre pond on the Jefferson county side. A narrow levee separates the pond from the riverbank; it's surrounded by a dense band of trees and shrubs. Black-crowned herons flew off, calling, when we stepped onto the levee. We waited a while, listening, then heard whooshing overhead as a flock of wood ducks came down onto the water. There were 2 females with brood on the pond , and more on the lake. 10 Islands observations ("J" - Jefferson county pond), partial list: Wood duck (34 adult [28J], 38 young [8J]) Lesser scaup (3) Double-cr. cormorant (28) Geat blue heron (8) Great egret (15) Green heron (2) Black-crowned night-heron (14) Osprey (2) Bald eagle (2 juvenile) American coot Willow flycatcher (J) Prothonotary warbler (J) Baltimore oriole Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
