Personally, I think people are nuts not to deploy Secure Gateway for secure remote access. We probably use it more than our customers, so that we have a method for remote support from anywhere, and from behind any firewall. The product is free, so all you need to do is supply hardware, and it doesn't need to be the latest and greatest. All you need is a Certificate, which will cost about $150....depending on which country you are in. In the case of WI, the origination is from the client workstation within the firewall and is thus, usually allowed. If you have the issue of having traffic blocked by a firewall, then secure gateway is an alternative that would get around that problem.
