An alternative to the below is as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\App.exe]
ʺFlagsʺ=dword:00000408
This key tells App.exe to look for twain_32.dll in the system Windows directory
(%WINDIR%), instead of the version beneath the userʹs profile directory
(%USERPROFILE%\Windows).

I learned that the hard way while getting Adobe to work. It *feels* like
there may be another dll that the Office Imaging wants there too but I have yet
to find it. I am currently combing through Filemon to see if anything jumps
out at me.

Poking around Google, I am definitely not the first one to get this error
but I don't see any solutions for it either.

weird. I am working on the exact same issue tonight. It also looks like
we hae similer setups. I am using an HP scanjet 5590 though. I have a fujitsu
scansnap s500 here but could not find twain drivers for it.

I can scan into adobe pro like a champ. No problems there. nice and fast
too.

with office, from what I can tell, you have to use the Microsoft Office
Document Imaging tool. There are two, the document scanning tool and the
document imageing too.

Those tools recognize my scanner but I get an error after that.

from what I can tell you get it working locally, start a twain aware app and
it shoudl be int he list of scanners. That has been true for me so far, I
just get an error from the MS tool.
