OK ... I found a Cisco Catalyst switch that has UDP 1434 open and a SQL2k
server that has TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 open. I have installed SQL2k SP3 to
the SQL server. Should that be ok? What stepps should i take now?

Mike,

Best way to check a subnet, or set of subnets
Fscan -p 1433,1434 (1.x.x.1-1.x.x.254)

This will scan your subnets or subnet ( depends on start and end IP Address)
and tell you what is listening on 1433, and 1434. You might be suprized. ( I
check for all the ports 21,22,23,25,80,8081, ( BO2k, Netbus, and a few other
nasty ones.)

Ed

PS: Fscan is from foundstones free tools, quite a nice thing to have in your
admin tools.

Thanks, I don't believe 1433 1434 are open. We do use Office 2k though.

As long as 1433 and 1434 arent open and you arent using MSDE (Which
comes
with MS office, I think specifically Visio and some other stuff) you are
fine.

I have patched my SQL servers, but was reading about MSDE or something
like
that for desktops. I am not up on SQL so I need to ask this. If i am
just
loading the MDAC on the Citrix XP server, do I need to do anything to
them
to protect our servers? Is this just on SQL servers or are our XP
servers
needing something also?
