Hi, There is a limited amount of kernel memory available for printer drivers. Many printer drivers don't unload from memory until session that loaded them logs off. If the memory quota for printer drivers is exceeded, new ones won't load. TSE and the latest TSE-safe HP printer drivers have a major problem, their size. If HP had just fixed the TSE unfriendly drivers without bloating them with all that "wonderful" functionality, life would be sweet. Instead we've got drivers that consist of over 10+ DLLs, that use heaps more memory than native drivers, and that can create some interesting problems when there isn't any room for any more. The only fix is to use smaller drivers, or a smaller number of drivers. Use native TSE drivers wherever possible. Some manufacturers like Lexmark actually have "slim" drivers, available on request that are specifically designed for terminal servers. It's quite easy to use an HP 4000 series driver for the 4100/4050 etc printers to reduce the total number of drivers used. Where you need support for additional functionality (multi-bin printers etc) use postscript drivers. It's really quite easy to graft a win2k driver PPD file into a TSE compatible PS driver package.=20 Regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace, Milton 4064=20 Queensland, Australia tel +61 7 32467704 rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Ulrich Mack rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx=20 Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace, Milton 4064=20 Queensland Australia.=20 tel +61 7 3246 7704=20 -----Original Message----- From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Wednesday, 7 April 2004 3:17 AM To: Thin@Freelists. Org (E-mail) Subject: [THIN] Printing Support on an old Farm Still supporting a TSE Metaframe 1.8 Farm that supplies a published desktop to users on Wyse 3360 Terminals. I set a default network printer using defprint for each terminal by name. I am experiencing problems with users reporting that they are unable to print to their network printer within MS Office documents and receive errors indicating "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try one or more of the following: Print a test page, Make sure the printer is On and Online, Reinstall the Printer Driver" These errors occur at least a couple times per day as of late, are not restricted to just one or two servers, and also occur with multiple printer types (recent ones have been HP LaserJet 8000 5e, HP LaserJet 4100 6 and HP LaserJet 4000 5e, but it has occurred on LaserJet 5's as well.) The only way I can fix this (temporarily that is) is to disable connections, wait until all users on that server logoff\timeout, go into the registry on the problematic server and remove the driver entry for the printer in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\ Wind ows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2]. I then reboot the server and re-install the drivers on the problematic server using my print server as the source of the drivers. My print server only has the version 2 drivers installed. I need to able to prevent this driver corruption from occurring any further, can anyone offer some suggestions? Thanks! ******************************************************** This Week's Sponsor - RTO Software / TScale What's keeping you from getting more from your terminal servers?
