Thanks to all the reply and your suggestion.  I finally got it working I
think.  I also found the following article to be extremely helpful for
anyone who might have the same issue in the future.

I was wondering if anyone is using exchange IM feature.  I am trying it
but I kept getting Exchange IM Sign-in Failure.  The person logged on to
this computer does not have permission to use the specified email
address.  Please type your email address and password.  I used the same
username and password to sign in to exchange without problem. And I also
made sure that IM is enabled.
