I think some of the newer APC UPS's have a network port as well. This is
really nice for remotely accessing the UPS when a server goes belly up.

I'm using an APC SmartUPS 2200XL with an additional battery to power 4
servers and a tape backup library. I could throw on another server as well
as I'm not at maximum capacity yet. It works nicely, connects via serial
using a Share-UPS to all my servers, and gives enough time to issue shutdown
commands and have the servers safely shutdown.

Since people are talking about UPSs and power outages, I was wondering if
anyone had suggestions on a good UPS. We have a group of Proliant servers
that need to be protected. In the future I expect we will have some Dells
as well. Our power needs right now are about 2750 W according to the APC
site. We are looking at the APC Symmetra RM 4kva with one expansion frame
(SYRMXR4B4). I noticed that these units communicate with the servers via a
network connection. Does that mean when our routers go down do to power
outage the servers don't turn off nicely? Does anyone know of a good
solution that shuts down windows servers even if everything else is down,
including the network?
Thanks!
Chad
