CTX105469 - Explaining and Troubleshooting Multiple Policies within the Management Console This document was published at: http://support.citrix.com/kb/entry.jspa?externalID=CTX105469 Document ID: CTX105469, Created on: Dec 23, 2004, Updated: Dec 23, 2004 Products: Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Microsoft Windows 2000, Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Microsoft Windows 2003, Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 for Microsoft Windows 2000, Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 for Microsoft Windows 2003 Usage With User Policies, one can apply MetaFrame XP settings including shadowing permission settings, printer auto-creation settings, and client device mapping settings, to specific users or user groups. Using policies, one can customize your environment at the user level. User Policy settings override all other MetaFrame XP and Terminal Services settings. Precedence of Settings A setting specified in Citrix Connection Configuration takes precedence over per-user and per-client settings. However, for some ICA connection settings, one can select an option to apply settings from user accounts or ICA Clients to the ICA connection. One can specify that an ICA connection uses some settings from user accounts by selecting Inherit User Configuration. Important One can create user policies to enable some connection settings for specific users or user groups. User policies override similar connection settings configured in Citrix Connection Configuration. However, if functionality is disabled in Citrix Connection Configuration, one cannot enable the functionality by creating user policies. Prioritize Your Policies When one creates policies for entire user groups, one may find that some members of the group require exceptions to some policy rules. To more effectively manage your policies, one can create new policies for only those users who need exception to a policy?s rules, and then rank the policy for those individual users higher than the policy for the entire group. Extended Policies FAQ Management Console Help The View Resultant Policy feature within the Policies Node of the Management Console The Search tool You can use the Search tool in the Management Console to find which policies are applied to which users, and to determine the effective rule settings when more than one policy is applied to the same user. To view the Search Tool dialog box, click on the toolbar or right-click the Policies node and select Search. Use Search to view the final rule settings for users to whom multiple policies are assigned. If you search for policies, the search results include the policies you created as well as a resultant policy. Double-click the resultant policy to view how each rule is set for the selected users after the rules are prioritized. For example, you assigned two policies to a user and each has a different setting for the Client Audio Mapping rule. Client audio mapping is turned off in the policy with a higher priority. The resultant policy shows client audio mapping is turned off. You can search your user policies (Search for drop-down list) associated with user/group (Browse drop-down list to locate a user or a group of users or type the name of a user or group). Click Search to return a list of the policies. Important Policy changes apply to new connections. If you change a policy assigned to users who are already connected, they cannot see the change until they log off and log back on. ******************************************************** This Weeks Sponsor SeamlessPlanet.com Domain Names Register your .com domain name for as low as $7.85 One of the lowest prices on the web!
